Leonia to Develop Data-Driven Process for Speed Hump Installations
A discussion was held regarding the process for approving and installing speed humps. Councilman Fisher proposed establishing a clearer, data-driven process involving the police department, fire department, and the Pedestrian and Traffic Safety Committee, learning from other towns' ordinances. Leonia Community Solar Program Exceeds Initial Registration; EV Charging Infrastructure Contract Pending
The community solar program partnership with Eversolar has been successful, with 279 households registering and filling the initial allotment for 45% savings. New registrants are being placed on a solar farm for 40% savings, with more projects expected in Spring 2026. Additionally, Bergen County Commissioners will host an on-the-road meeting in Leonia in early 2027, and the inclusion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure is on the agenda for contract award consideration.
Leonia Swears In Three New Firefighters
Three new firefighters, Douglas Hernandez-Cornejo, Ledwin Rosario, and Aiden Torello, were sworn into the Leonia Fire Department. The ceremony included the standard oath of office and was attended by family members and borough officials, including Mayor Ziegler, Council President Ziegler, Borough Administrator Mesropian, Borough Clerk Mandel, and Borough Attorney Kuhl's representative, Levi Kuhl.
Broad Avenue Parking Study Shows Higher Crash Rate in Rear Angle Spots
A study of crash reports on Broad Avenue involving reverse angle parking from January 1st to September 15th revealed five crashes: two involving rear angle parking and three involving front angle parking. Despite 60% of parking spots being rear angle, 60% of crashes occurred in these spots, suggesting reversing into traffic is less safe than reversing into an empty space. An 81.5% decrease in accidents was cited for front angle parking.
Leonia Police Department Achieves State Accreditation with Zero Issues Found
Leonia Police Department received accreditation from the New Jersey State Chiefs of Police Association after an on-site assessment that found zero issues. This accreditation is described as difficult to obtain, with examples of cities like Newark spending significant resources to regain it. Chief Tammany and his team were credited for achieving this with little to no cost to the borough.
