Planning Commission Recommends Declining Special Use for Tobacco Sales
The board considered Resolution number 24-2026, which involved a recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commission to decline a special use permit for the sale of tobacco at a convenience store located at 17100 Dixie Highway. This item was part of the consent agenda.
Police Chief Reports on Successful Teen Gathering and Safety Concerns
Chief Davis reported on a recent unannounced teen gathering in a local park. Approximately 300 young people attended, and police officers interacted positively with them, resulting in no disruptions. He credited the youth for choosing to be peaceful and have a good time. The Chief also addressed a question regarding a grant for seatbelt enforcement, clarifying it does not cover child passenger safety. However, he mentioned that the department is looking into having officers certified as child passenger safety technicians and is exploring partnerships for distributing car seats. Separately, Chief Shills informed the board and attendees about an urgent law enforcement operation in Country Club Hills, advising everyone to shelter in place and proceed home cautiously after the meeting due to a serious incident.
Public Commenter Addresses Crime, Social Issues, and Proposes Music Education Solution
During the public participation segment, a Marine Corps veteran and clinical social worker, Mr. Doll, addressed the board. He shared a personal experience of being targeted by a weapon, attributing the incident to an intoxicated, angry, and possibly off-medication individual. He broadened his commentary to discuss issues of crime and societal problems, referencing 'black miscreants' off medication and unemployed terrorizing Illinois. He advocated for music education as a solution to prevent such issues and highlighted the impact on black grandmothers and mothers in communities. He also mentioned submitting documents for the public record prior to the meeting.
Community Relations Director Updates on Business Openings and Mobile Services
Director Retliff provided an update on community and business relations. Trustee Huckabee inquired about an opening for 'Twin Greens' on June 3rd, a mobile unit that reportedly visited communities in Southland. Director Retliff confirmed that the village received the information but a bit later than usual due to other engagements. He explained that businesses often set their own opening dates and times, and the village may have prior commitments. The 'Twin Greens' mobile unit, operated by Dr. Twin Green, aims to offer services to communities in Southland and will provide services free of charge to those without insurance. Dr. Green has also purchased a building at 17080 Kedzey for future renovation.
