Ordinance Regarding Animals Referred to Workshop for Further Discussion
The City Council decided to refer the introduction of an ordinance repealing and reenacting Title VI of the Grand Junction Municipal Code regarding animals to an upcoming workshop for further discussion. Councilmember Stout requested this referral, citing the need for a more robust conversation involving legal and animal services teams. The motion to table the item and refer it to a workshop was made by Councilmember Stout and seconded by Councilmember Ballard, passing with a seven-to-zero vote.
May Revenue Report Shows Strong Growth in Sales and Use Tax Collections
The May Revenue Report indicates that sales and use tax collections, the city's largest revenue source, are up 6.08% compared to May of 2025. Year-to-date collections are 5.9% above the same period, and through May, collections are 2.3% over budgeted projections. A revamped dashboard for the revenue report will be released on www.gjcity.org, with further updates planned for the June report.
City Approves Turf Reduction Plan for Water Conservation; Parks Department Seeks Planning Grant
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board discussed the city's drought response plan, identifying 13 sites for turf reduction aimed at a 25% decrease in water use over a four-plus-year period. Parks slated for changes include Lilac Park, Autumn Ridge, Honeycomb, Dos Rios Bike Park, Desert Vista, Canyon View, Duck Pond Park, Paradise Hills, Las Colonias, Fifth Street Interchange, Pine Ridge Perimeter, Spring Valley 2, and Wingate. Signage and neighborhood outreach are planned. The board also discussed a planning grant application for the salt flats development park layout. Separately, the Forestry Board is exploring a partnership to include marketing materials about tree care in welcome packets for new homeowners.
Stephen Boyd Appointed to Downtown Development Authority Business Improvement District
Stephen Boyd was appointed to the Downtown Development Authority Business Improvement District for a partial term expiring June 30th, 2028. The motion was made by Councilmember Stout and seconded by Mayor Pro Tem Van Dyke. The appointment passed with a unanimous vote of six to zero.
Grand Junction City Council Proclaims Juneteenth Celebration
The City Council recognized June 19th, 2026, as Juneteenth in the City of Grand Junction. This proclamation acknowledges the historical significance of Juneteenth, which commemorates the abolition of slavery and the emancipation of African American slaves in the United States. David Combs accepted the proclamation, emphasizing the theme of 'truth and freedom' for the upcoming celebration and highlighting the importance of making this history known. The Juneteenth celebration on June 20th, 2026, will include a donation drive for the Food Bank of the Rockies.
