Community Divided Over Hilltop Needmore Park Development Plans

The board discussed the proposed development of athletic fields and parking lots at Hilltop Needmore Park, which has raised significant community opposition. Concerns were voiced about the destruction of mature trees, rolling hills, natural habitats, and the disruption of the park's serene environment. Residents emphasized the park's value as a sanctuary for recreation, healing, and connecting with nature. The discussion also touched upon the original purpose of the land acquisition, the potential for alternative sites, and the importance of preserving natural spaces for future generations. Some commissioners expressed support for the development, highlighting the need for active recreation facilities and the park's potential as a destination, while others urged caution and consideration for conservation.

North Lake Subdivision to Implement No Parking Restrictions on School Days

The town board discussed and voted on implementing no parking, stopping, or standing regulations in portions of the North Lake subdivision to address student parking and carpool traffic from Willow Spring High School. After considerable discussion regarding survey methods, consensus levels, and the potential for traffic displacement, the board ultimately voted to approve an ordinance that includes all streets in North Lake subdivision except for Price Lake Way (west of Fuquay-Varina Parkway) and a specific section of Jones Lake Road, with a clarification to include Fuquay-Varina Parkway between Old Honeycutt Road and Nantahala Lakeway. The ordinance will be in effect on school days from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Signage will be installed, and proactive enforcement by the police department is planned for the start of the next school year. The town management will also meet with the high school administration to discuss the impact of student and parent behavior on the community.
