Edmonds City Council Terminates Flock Safety Camera Contract Amidst Data Privacy Concerns
The Edmonds City Council voted unanimously to terminate the city's contract with Flock Safety cameras. The decision was driven by concerns over data security, liability exposure due to new legislation, public disclosure requirements, and the potential misuse of data by federal agencies like ICE or administrations like the Trump administration. While the contract was set to expire in November 2026, the council opted for immediate termination. The city had received a grant from the Washington Auto Theft Prevention Authority to cover the camera system's costs, and there will be no financial penalty or refund due to the grant funding. The council also noted that the cameras had been deactivated since April 2026, but direct termination was preferred to uphold public trust and avoid potential human error in compliance with new laws.
Edmonds City Council Votes to Fly Pride Flag in June and Develop Flag Display Policy
The Edmonds City Council voted to direct the administration to mount the Pride flag on City Hall for the month of June, following a motion made by Councilmember Nand and a subsequent amendment to recommend rather than direct the action. The motion passed unanimously after considerable debate regarding the council's authority and the importance of symbolic gestures of support for the LGBTQIA+ community. This action comes after the previous year's decision to not fly the flag and the removal of the mounting bracket, which had caused significant community backlash. The council also directed the city attorney to draft an ordinance creating a fair and impartial process for petitioning the city to mount specific flags on City Hall. This ordinance aims to establish a clear policy for future flag displays, moving beyond ad-hoc decisions and ensuring a consistent approach to public property use for symbolic gestures. This followed a separate motion to reconsider a previous vote on Resolution 1589, related to bike lanes on Main Street, which was also passed unanimously. The reconsideration of Resolution 1589 led to a motion to amend the Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP) to lower the priority of the Main Street bike lane project from high to low, a motion that passed five to two, reflecting community concerns about parking and business impact.
Edmonds Declares Wastewater Plant Emergency, Authorizes $212K Sludge Hauling Contract
The Edmonds City Council declared an emergency at the Evans Wastewater Treatment Plant and waived competitive bidding requirements to authorize emergency transport of liquid sludge. The emergency was declared due to a mechanical failure of the swing pump on May 7th, 2026, which prevented the processing of wastewater solids and threatened the discharge of raw sewage into Puget Sound. The city secured emergency services from a private company to haul the sludge, incurring a cost of $212,000. The council approved the resolution, recognizing the critical need to avoid environmental damage. The Public Works Director noted that replacement parts for the swing pump have been procured, and the plant's operating budget can absorb the emergency cost.
