Fire and Police Departments Report on Staffing, Incidents, and New Technology
Councilmember Graziano provided an update on the fire and police departments. The fire department responded to multiple fires, two water rescue recovery incidents, and a hazardous material spill on Route 22. Two new firefighters graduated and started, bringing the total staffing to 50, including the Chief and Deputy. The department will evaluate a new AI technology called Mermaid, which monitors radio traffic, translates languages, and can alert on critical keywords, potentially enhancing safety during major incidents. The police department has one new officer, with another entering the academy soon and three candidates undergoing background checks, potentially bringing staffing to 63. Parking enforcement is well-staffed. An upcoming ordinance for a parking appeals board is expected soon.
Rio's Brazilian Steakhouse Liquor License Transfer Approved for Center Square Location
The council considered a resolution to approve the transfer of a liquor license for Rio's Brazilian Steakhouse from 127 South Broad Street in Nazareth to 464-466 Center Square in Easton. The restaurant, currently operated under a third-party management arrangement with a liquor license owned by the property owner, seeks to transfer the license owned by Mr. Glesi. This is described as an operational change, not an expansion, with no anticipated changes in traffic, parking, occupancy, or operating hours. The property is already zoned for restaurant use. The restaurant provides 18 jobs and contributes tax revenue. Rio's Brazilian Steakhouse has no citation history or complaints in Easton and has maintained a good public reception. All employees are RAMP certified, and the health license is up to date.
