East Hampton Town Trustees Meeting 06/22/2026
Published: Jun 22, 2026
Trustees to Develop Policy for Recurring Seasonal Beach Events
The Trustees are considering how to handle recurring seasonal events like surf lessons and yoga on the beaches, which differ from traditional single-day events like clam bakes. These recurring events are considered commercial operations and may require different permitting and fee structures. The town is currently permitting some of these, and the Trustees need to develop a policy for the next season. A surf camp for young children operates five to seven days a week, and another operator offers private lessons. A discussion ensued about whether these should go through the town's special events committee and how the Trustees would retain the right to decline permits. The consensus is to develop a clear policy and fee structure for these commercial, recurring events for the upcoming season.
Acabonac Marsh Mosquito Larvae Survey Results and Future Plans Presented
The Acabonac Marsh mosquito larvae survey results were discussed, noting high counts in some areas due to rain and high tides. Help from interns from the Hackabonic Protection Committee and Natural Resources department will be utilized for future surveys. Vector Control is hand-treating hot spots and will avoid helicopter treatments until DEC confirms no eagles are nesting. Pete Topping from Peconic Baykeeper is interested in starting a similar program in Southampton next year. A paddle and pickup cleanup event for Accabonac Harbor is scheduled for Saturday, open to the public.
Trustees Discuss Need for a Small Skiff for Operational Duties
A discussion was held regarding the need for a small boat, like a skiff, for Trustees' duties such as inspecting duck blinds. While the Trustees have other boats, a small, easily maneuverable skiff is lacking. Options like checking with Marine Patrol for available boats or considering municipal contracts were discussed. The potential for acquiring a retired boat from Marine Patrol or the shellfish hatchery was also mentioned. The consensus was to investigate available options and potentially plan for acquiring a suitable boat for the next season.
Wainscott Pond Blue-Green Algae Counts Decrease, But Remain Elevated
The blue-green algae update focused on Wainscott Pond, where counts have decreased from previous weeks but remain higher than last year. Readings are currently around 500, down from a high of 1000, but double the count from the same time last year. The potential use of micro-bubbler systems to control blue-green algae in small ponds was discussed, with a suggestion to consult Dr. Gobler about evaluating such technology. The Water Mill pond is also experiencing blue-green algae issues, as reported in the newspaper.
Eelgrass Mapping and Signage Project Update: Collaboration and Placement Discussed
An update was provided on the PEP eelgrass mapping and signage project. Signs are being prepared for review. The installation of signs will be a joint effort between the town and the Trustees. Locations for signs are suggested to be at road ends or launching ramps to raise awareness among boaters. The accuracy of the PEP map of eelgrass locations was discussed, with confirmation of presence but varying quality. The signs will include QR codes linking to more information about eelgrass beds and their importance. Discussions are ongoing regarding sign placement and collaboration between town departments.
