Coronado City Council Approves Over $1.1 Million in Community Grants for FY 2026-2027
The Coronado City Council reviewed and allocated funds for the fiscal year 2026-2027 Community Grant Program. The program has an allocation of $1,202,000. Two funding options were presented: Option One fully funded all renewal consideration grants and mini-grant requests, totaling $1,145,319. Option Two prioritized organizations with demonstrated prior participation or council support for mini-grants, totaling $1,051,149. Councilmember Fleming expressed concerns about funding organizations that lobby the city council, specifically mentioning Emerald Keepers, and advocated for stricter scrutiny of grant applications. Councilmember Stewart suggested focusing on local initiatives and questioned the necessity of some grants. The council ultimately approved numerous grants after public comment and deliberation, with some adjustments made to recommended amounts and some applications not being funded. A new sustainability planner position is being recruited for the city. The council also approved a special consideration for the Coronado Junior Arts League to receive $30,000 despite missing the application deadline, and an additional $5,000-$8,000 for the Coronado Community Theater's soundboard upgrade.
