Fountain City Classic Chairman Updates Council on Event Success and Scholarships

He has served as chair for 36 years, describing it as a labor of love. He thanked co-chairs Jean Lynn and Sandra Ellison, and executive director Robbie, along with 85 volunteers. The event has provided approximately $5 million in scholarships to students attending the participating institutions and also offers community scholarships, with 29 students awarded in a recent luncheon.

The City Council recognized and proclaimed June 2026 as Responsible Fatherhood Month. The proclamation highlighted the importance of fathers in children's lives, emphasizing their positive impact on emotional security, psychological and economic benefits, and the prevention of issues such as poverty, abuse, and neglect. It also stressed that strong families are foundational to thriving communities and are essential for addressing social challenges. The proclamation was read by Mayor Pro Tem and accepted by Pastor Jared Hinton, who expressed gratitude for the city's leadership on this issue. Other pastors and community members also shared personal stories and thanked the council for their support.
Columbus Proclaims June 21st, 2026, as National ASK Day to Address Gun Violence
The City Council proclaimed Sunday, June 21st, 2026, as National ASK Day (Asking Saves Kids Day). The proclamation addressed the epidemic of gun violence affecting children, noting it as a leading cause of death. The ASK campaign encourages parents to ask if there is an unlocked gun where their child plays before visits. The goal is to make this a common safety question to protect children from injury and death. The proclamation was read by Mayor Pro Tem, and several mothers who lost children to gun violence or suicide shared their experiences and expressed gratitude for the initiative. Mayor Skip Henderson of Columbus, Georgia, signed the proclamation.
