Mayor Reports on Local Business Openings, Media Support, and Tourism Initiatives

The Mayor attended the ribbon cutting and grand reopening of the Flying J truck stop on June 4th, noting its impressive facilities and restaurant. On June 9th, the Mayor met with the new Box Elder Guardian newspaper, Jennifer (managing editor), to discuss partnerships with the Chamber of Commerce for advertising to support the newspaper and its staff. On June 11th, a Rush Rally Marketing Meeting was held, involving the Chamber and Air and Space Museum to secure a $500 tourism grant aimed at diverting rally traffic from the interstate into Box Elder. Ideas include placing a sign advertising the Air and Space Museum on Boomsmas property and utilizing geofencing through KOTA for targeted advertising, with a guaranteed 50,000 hits. This initiative is expected to benefit local businesses through increased sales tax revenue.

Sanitary Sewer Project and Easement Approved

A professional services agreement for the KLJ Engineering Highway 1416 Sanitary Sewer Project Phase 2 was approved by the Public Works and Planning and Zoning Committee and placed on the consent agenda. Additionally, a sewer easement for Harry Cow Brewing Real Estate Holding South Dakota LLC regarding public access to a sanitary sewer line was approved and also sent to the consent agenda.

The Mayor attended an Ellsworth Air Force Base change of responsibility ceremony on June 12th, where Chief Master Sergeant Tia Mullins relinquished responsibility as command chief to Chief Master Sergeant Thomas Podgorski.

The Toastmasters Club received approval for a sponsorship donation agreement to host an open house on June 29th, 2026, utilizing the community center. Staff recommended waiving the associated fees, and the council approved the agreement with a motion by David and a second by Talis. The vote passed with all members present voting 'Aye'.
