Council Agrees to Remove Certain Properties from Historic District Nominations
Council discussed the approval of nominations for the historic district and landmark overlay zone. A consensus was reached to remove specific properties from nomination based on objections or pending further discussion. The council decided to proceed with voting on properties that received affirmative 'yes' responses or had no objections. A motion was made to close the public hearing on the historic district nominations.
Fire Department Staff Honored for Heroic and Technical Rescues
The City Council recognized six members of the fire department for their actions during two separate incidents. Assistant Chief Dennis Ley, Lieutenant Mark Romanelli, Firefighter Matthew Smith, and Firefighter Daniel Burke were recognized for their professional actions, teamwork, and decisive actions during a technical rescue incident at Beacon High School on April 28th, 2026, involving a student's finger lodged in a swimming pool. Lieutenant Robert Simmons was recognized for his courageous and selfless actions on May 5th, 2026, while off duty, when he entered the Hudson River to assist a kayaker who had capsized. Firefighter Wasaki was also to be recognized but is on vacation.
Dylan Suave Appointed as City of Beacon Police Officer
The City Council appointed Dylan Suave to the position of Police Officer. Suave is a graduate of Archbishop Stepinac High School and is currently enrolled at Paul Smith College. He has experience working for the town of Fishkill's Department of Buildings and Parks. Suave passed all required testing, including agility and background checks, and will attend the police academy later this summer. The appointment fills one of four vacant police officer positions.
Capital Program Public Hearing Opened; Drone Use Questions Raised
The City Council opened a public hearing for the 2027-2031 capital program. While the program and its financing plan have been discussed in workshops with department heads, a question arose regarding the use of drones by the police department and associated privacy concerns. The council decided to close the public hearing and discuss the drone program question further in a workshop before voting on the capital program, potentially delaying the vote until a later meeting.
Property Owner Objects to Historic District Nomination
During a public hearing, Josh Fox formally objected to his home at 11 North Elm Street being included in the proposed historic district landmark overlay. He stated the designation offers him no benefit, that restrictions are vague and already applied, and that his home does not meet the city's criteria for historic significance. He also cited concerns about the process, including late notification and unaddressed inaccuracies. He requested his home be removed from consideration.
