City Council Approves Budget Amendments and New Fiscal Year Budget

The City Council adopted Ordinance 2026-04, which amends the city's budget for fiscal year 2025-2026 by transferring funds to balance the budget at the end of the fiscal year. Following this, the council adopted Ordinance 2026-05, the annual budget for fiscal year 2026-2027. This budget included adjustments from the first reading, reallocating funds from the parks budget to improve the camera system and purchase a bush hog attachment for the public works tractor. The overall budget total remained unchanged. Interest income was noted to have decreased due to capital expenditures and anticipated rebates.

Resident Appeals for Help with Recurring Sewer Main and Hillside Erosion Issue

A resident, Walter Ryan, addressed the council regarding a recurring sewer main issue at his property and neighboring addresses (28-34 Sheridan Drive). He described a sewer main break in 2011 that led to the installation of retaining walls and cylinder-type pipes. Since 2024, the hillside has been slipping, causing concern about potential collapse. Mr. Ryan stated that SD1 (presumably the relevant utility district) has denied responsibility. The council agreed to have the public works superintendent, Mike, coordinate with SD1 to hash out responsibility for the issue.

Police Department Surplus Equipment Declared, Authorized for Auction

The City Council adopted Municipal Order 2026-06, declaring surplus property from the Alexandria Police Department and authorizing its disposal by auction. The items declared surplus are obsolete or no longer needed. An individual has expressed interest in bidding on these items, intending to resell them to smaller police departments. The sale will be conducted as a single package auction, likely on GovDeals.

Fishing Derby Success, New Skate Park Addition, and Proposals for Senior Housing and Zoning Updates

The city discussed the successful Alexandria Community Park Youth Fishing Derby held on June 6th, which saw 169 participants and was supported by numerous local businesses and organizations. The temporary skate park had its ribbon-cutting ceremony, with positive feedback on its addition to the city park, despite concerns about noise and parking. The city council also reviewed a proposal to encourage zoning for HOA-supported patio homes to accommodate the growing 65+ population who wish to downsize and remain in Alexandria. This initiative aims to free up larger family homes and retain tax revenue without increasing school enrollment.

City Developments: Business Maps, Grant Progress, Infrastructure Projects, and Staffing Updates

The City Clerk reported that maps detailing local businesses have been created and distributed to participating businesses and are available to the public. These maps include contact information and locations for businesses in Alexandria. The City Administrator announced ongoing grant initiatives, including the purchase of an electric vehicle charging port for the new city building and the development of a community safety action plan through the Safe Streets for All grant, which involves evaluating roadways and sidewalks with a consultant. The East Main sidewalk project is progressing, with utility pole relocation scheduled to begin in late July and conclude by December. A new Wawa store is expected to open in September. The police department has successfully backfilled positions, bringing staffing levels to allotment for the new year. Public works and zoning/code enforcement reports are attached, with the latter receiving commendation for its efficiency.
