Agawam Police Department Leverages Flock Cameras for Enhanced Public Safety

The Agawam Police Department is utilizing Flock cameras, which capture images of the rear of vehicles including license plates, to aid in law enforcement investigations. These cameras are not video cameras and do not record individuals. The data is stored on Flock's system for 30 days, after which it is automatically disposed of. Access by officers is restricted to active investigations, requiring a case number. The system has been instrumental in solving cases, including a fatal hit-and-run accident and a rape investigation, and has assisted in locating individuals during Silver Alerts for those with conditions like Alzheimer's or dementia. The police department emphasizes that there is no expectation of privacy for license plates on public roads and that the Flock system uses high-level encryption, has never been hacked, and cannot be used as a general surveillance tool, only to assist in locating vehicles.
