Local Planning Committee to Reconvene for District Facilities Plan Update
The board approved reconvening the Shelby County Schools Local Planning Committee upon approval from the Kentucky Department of Education. This step is necessary to add a specific right to the District Facilities Plan (DFP) before any action can be taken on it. The previous committee will be reconvened, and this process is being followed as recommended by KDE to expedite the inclusion of the item on the DFP.
Work-Based Learning Program for Students with Complex Needs Showcased
The board recognized students participating in the work-based learning program and transitional programming for students with complex needs. Ryan Cooper and Heather Row, teachers from Collins High School, presented on the program's components, including pre-employment classes provided by the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, in-school jobs (cafeteria, custodial, coffee cart), and community-based work sites. Partnerships with various businesses like Protein Hub, Family Activities Center, Anytime Fitness, Domino's, Simpsonville, and Hardies were highlighted. One student achieved welding certifications through a partnership with ATC, showcasing advanced skill development. The program aims to prepare students for community employment and independence, with students able to participate from freshman year until age 21.

Board Approves Change Order for Milestone Bleachers and Press Box Project
The board discussed and approved change order one for the Milestone bleachers and press box project (BG25089). This change order, totaling $9,886, is for the relocation of utilities and fencing that were found to be in conflict with the new bleacher footers. These unforeseen conditions required adjustments to the original plans, necessitating additional work during the summer of 2025. The change order is being processed to finalize and close out the project.
Public Comment Highlights Payment Dispute on Milestone Project; Board Explains Financial Entanglements
During public comment, Karen Willett expressed confusion and frustration regarding payment for work done on the Milestone project. She stated that the design team for Milestone and Kodell Company was approved, but David Elder has introduced new complications, demanding a finalized punch list before payment. Willett presented statements and an email confirming an agreement for payment upon approval. She requested to be paid directly rather than through a third party. The superintendent and board members acknowledged the complexity of the situation, explaining that a lawsuit between Redley and another subcontractor has tied up residual funds, preventing final project closure and payment. The board expressed empathy and a desire for resolution but must follow legal counsel's advice.
