Shafter Council Approves Balanced 2026-2027 Operating Budget

The city council reviewed and approved the proposed operating budget for fiscal year 2026-2027, noting a balanced budget in the general fund and other major funds. The water fund, which had previously shown expenses exceeding revenues, is projected to exceed revenues in the upcoming fiscal year, thanks to voter-approved increases. The sewer fund also shows revenues exceeding expenses, with rate changes contributing to higher revenues to cover upcoming capital investments. The general fund is projected to be tight, with revenues closely matching expenses, but a slight surplus is anticipated due to potential vacancies and underspending. Significant increases in police department and public works budgets were noted.
