Resident Urges Council to Increase Lifeguard Pay Amidst Shortage
Nikki Meader spoke about the need to increase lifeguard pay at the Rec Center due to a shortage of 20 lifeguards. She noted that the city pays $13.50 per hour while CASA offers $15 per hour, leading to lifeguards being hired away. Meader urged the council to consider increasing pay to retain lifeguards and keep the pool open for lap swimmers, water aerobics participants, and children. She also suggested offering more lifeguarding classes to train new lifeguards, especially with a new water park coming soon.
Hafen and Levitt Lane Project Nearing Completion; Possible Opening Tomorrow
Travis Anderson, Interim Director of Development Services, provided an update on the Hafen and Levitt Lane project. A walkthrough is scheduled for the following morning at 7 a.m. to assess if Hafen Lane can be opened, as Levitt Lane is already open. The project is progressing well, with the asphalt looking excellent. This update also followed a discussion on local fires and dry conditions, where the chief noted that waterways like the Muddy River are usually dry at this time of year and would not significantly help fire suppression.

Randy provided information on upcoming 4th of July events and flag installations. Youth involvement is encouraged to assist with this installation. The 4th of July opening ceremony is scheduled for around 7:10 a.m., with Mayor Whipple confirmed to attend. A dunk tank will be available, and Randy wished Patty a happy birthday. The event will feature music, food trucks, water balloon fights, a slip and slide, and face painting. T-shirts ordered are expected to be available for pickup starting Thursday. Fireworks will begin at 9 p.m. on July 4th.
Mesquite Public Arts Commission Updates on New Sculptures, Murals, and Community Events
Steve, chair of the Mesquite Public Arts Commission, provided an update on public art projects. Wind sculptures have been installed in a circle at the Oasis Wingate, with landscaping expected by the end of July. Funding for a mural on the Reliance building, created by Miles Woods, was secured through grants from Reliance, Paul Benedict (in memory of his wife Barbara), and the Nevada Arts Council. The mural's dedication is tentatively scheduled for July 1st. Grant money also funded wraps for two OPD boxes, designed by Miles Woods with an 'America 250' theme, though these will not be ready by July 4th. Additionally, Steve discussed activities related to Mesquite Works, including an upcoming encore performance by four teachers who won a contest, and a 'bucket of ice water' challenge where teachers collect coins, with the winner receiving a dunking on August 1st. A back-to-school fair is planned for August 1st, featuring a dunk tank and school supply giveaways.
BHC Inc. Awarded Bid for Pioneer Park Dugouts and Backstop Project
The council considered awarding a bid for the Pioneer Park Field 1 dugouts and backstop project. Public Works received six sealed bids ranging from $224,225 to $370,685.94. The engineer's estimate for the project, which includes removal of existing structures, new retaining walls, dugouts, backstops, fencing, and concrete flatwork, was $200,000. Despite the lowest bid being slightly over the estimate, staff recommended awarding the project to the lowest responsible bidder, BHC Inc., for $224,225.20, citing rising prices. Funding for the project comes from capital projects.
