Edison Council Honors Firefighters and Police for Heroic Rescues
The Edison Township Council recognized and commended members of the Edison Fire Department and Edison Police Department for their heroic actions during two separate incidents: a motor vehicle accident with entrapment and fire on Interstate 287 on May 16th, 2026, and a structural fire with entrapment at 149 Marina Drive on May 20th, 2026. The resolutions highlighted the courage, professionalism, and teamwork displayed by the first responders in saving lives and mitigating hazards under dangerous conditions. Several council members and public speakers expressed deep gratitude and admiration for their service and sacrifice. The meeting also included recognitions for outgoing Clerk Cheryl Marsimano and discussions on a proposed bamboo ordinance, fiber optic infrastructure, and park programming.
Residents Voice Strong Opposition to Polanski Park Event Space Pilot Program
Edison Township Council heard significant public opposition to a pilot program at Polanski Park involving the creation of an event space with a stage, sand installation, and potential for amplified music and food trucks. Residents living adjacent to the park expressed concerns about noise, increased traffic, potential crime, environmental impact from the sand and construction, and a perceived breach of trust by the administration for not adequately consulting them. They highlighted the park's historical use as a quiet, passive open space and its designation as wetlands. Council members acknowledged the residents' concerns and committed to investigating the issue further, with the mayor planning to meet with residents. The council also discussed an ordinance to rescind the current bamboo ordinance and an agreement for fiber optic infrastructure, with some members expressing reservations about the latter due to concerns about AI and data centers.
Edison Council Advances Fiber Optic Agreement Amidst AI Concerns
The Edison Township Council discussed and advanced an ordinance authorizing the execution of a right-of-way use agreement with Pilot Fiber NJ LLC for the installation of fiber optic facilities. While presented as a routine infrastructure upgrade, several council members voiced strong opposition due to concerns that the fiber network could facilitate the growth of data centers and AI, leading to job displacement. Despite these reservations, the ordinance passed first reading, with the understanding that it is a BPU-approved fiber initiative. An ordinance accepting an easement for maintenance purposes along Route 27 for a proposed project also passed unanimously.
Edison Council Approves Estimated Tax Bills Amidst Budget Delays
During the resolutions portion of the meeting, the Edison Township Council discussed and adopted Resolution 351, which authorizes the tax collector to seek approval for mailing estimated tax bills after the statutory June 30th deadline. This was prompted by the delay in passing the municipal budget. Residents expressed concerns about the timing of these estimated bills, its impact on their personal budgeting, and potential tax increases. The township's business administrator explained that this is a common practice and that the estimated bills would reflect a 5% increase, though the final municipal tax increase is expected to be lower. The resolution was adopted, allowing for the tax bills to be sent out later.
Edison Township Clerk Cheryl Marsimano Honored Upon Retirement
The Edison Township Council discussed and honored the service of Township Clerk Cheryl Marsimano, who is retiring after 14 years with the township and 45 years as a resident. Numerous council members and public speakers shared personal anecdotes and expressed deep appreciation for her dedication, professionalism, and willingness to assist. They acknowledged the significant impact she had on the smooth operation of council meetings and township business. Marsimano, in turn, expressed her love for the town and her colleagues. The council presented her with a plaque and wished her well in her retirement.
