Aberdeen City Council Approves Preliminary Site Plan for New Activity Center Amidst Design Debate

The Aberdeen City Council approved the preliminary site plan for the Aberdeen Activity Center, located at 684 West Beller Avenue. The project, which has been in development since 2019, aims to provide recreational, educational, and community gathering spaces. Despite initial community visions including an indoor pool and extensive meeting rooms, the current design, influenced by budget constraints, focuses on gymnasium spaces, administrative offices, restrooms, a playground, and an outdoor field. Council members debated the discrepancy between the community's initial desires and the final design, with concerns raised about transparency and trust. The approved plan is a necessary step for the county to move forward with final design and construction, which is projected to take 18-24 months after bidding in spring 2027. The city also discussed the future repurposing of the current activity center building on Franklin Street.
